The Spirit Level applied to Bermuda.”                  Speaker

This presentation is based on the work of authors Richard Wilkinson and Kate Pickering (2009) who wrote The Spirit Level: Why More Equal Societies Almost Always Do Better (London: Allen Lane. See www.equalitytrust.org.uk).

Their research delves in to the hidden context of similar research undertaken in many different countries when taken together it becomes evident that larger the gaps between income differences among the highest 20 percent and the lower 20 percent of households in a jurisdiction predicts growing levels of obesity, diabetes, addictions, education failure, teen pregnancy, increased murder rates, over populated prisons and mental illness in a society.  Reducing the inequity between the poor and wealthy can solve these problems.
